Understanding the Political Economy of American Media: Promises and Perils for Structural Change

Community Lecture on Media Justice: Understanding the Political Economy of American Media: Promises and Perils with Victor Pickard

American media institutions and infrastructures are extremely commercialized compared to other systems around the world. The hyper-capitalist nature of US-based media creates unique challenges for social justice activists and for democracy writ large.

This discussion will present a structural critique of the US news media system—in Philadelphia and across the country—and will consider what structural reforms are necessary to create a different system, one that supports the information and communication needs of a multiracial democracy. The worsening local journalism crisis is also an opportunity for creating structural alternatives to failing commercial models, allowing us to reimagine what our media could and should look like.

Victor Pickard is a Professor of Media Policy and Political Economy at the Annenberg School for Communication. His research focuses on the history and political economy of media institutions, media activism, and the politics and normative foundations of media policy. His work is particularly concerned about the future of journalism and the role of media in a democratic society. His most recent book is Democracy Without Journalism?: Confronting the Misinformation Society.
