Mexico's election was historic on several levels: Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo is the first woman and Jewish president of Mexico and in most of North America, her electoral results bested current the presidents Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s (AMLO) 2018 results by 6 points, and the Morena coalition won a supermajority in the lower house of Congress, while also being two seats shy of a supermajority in the Senate. The election of Sheinbaum was seen as a referendum on Morena’s (National Regeneration Movement) achievements over the last six years and it proved the party’s vitality. For socialists, this election is important because it marks the success of Morena’s political program toward a radical transformation in both social welfare and constitutional reforms. Looking at Morena’s trajectory and recent electoral success should pose many questions for socialists in the U.S., especially with regard to our own electoral strategy, organizational culture, and opposition to empire from within. On this latter point, there are plenty of organizing opportunities DSA members need to collaborate on with the Mexican working class on both sides of the border.
This event is hosted by Philly DSA and the event will be lead by Eric Nava-Pérez of Latinos Socialistas.
