A feminist approach to domesticity. An evening with author Lois Volta.

Lois Volta, owner of the cleaning, organizing, and home-life consulting company, The Volta Way, has just announced her first book, Confessions of a Cleaning Lady. The book features a mix of excerpts from her past advice column at Philadelphia-based, Grid Magazine, tales from her ongoing radio show, The Everyday Feminist, and a how-to cleaning guide all written through a feminist, domestic theory lens. Volta’s book aims to analyze the gender inequities and systemic factors that play out in one’s home and offer solutions and advice for making a home feel more equal, sustainable, and productive.

About the Author:
Lois Volta is a domestic educator, professional organizer, owner, and creator of The Volta Way, a holistic, feminist domestics firm in Philadelphia, and owner of a natural cleaning product line. She also wrote a feminist domestics column for Grid magazine and has worked in feminist radio programming alongside of G-town Radio and Prometheus Radio to promote gender equality within the home, sustainable and holistic living.

About the Book:
To Lois, a home isn’t just a place you live — it’s a reflection of the way we move through the world. Now, in her own book, she delves further. Illuminating how societal patterns and world issues are mirrored in the way we approach the small stuff, like doing the dishes or wiping down the bathroom sink. Discussing how the fabric of our relationships can be frayed or repaired with the housework we choose or refuse to do. Surmising that similar to the way a butterfly can create a storm by flapping its wings, to practice feminism in the home is to take part in a community-quaking act of political resistance. Through Lois’s eyes, you are on your way to changing the world just by clearing your own clutter off the dining room table.
