We all have stories that have been passed through our family lines and are laden with rich lessons about survival and creative expression. Through a series of generative writing prompts and discussion of poems that engage African-American ancestral narratives, poet and audio storyteller, Sojourner Ahebee, will guide workshop participants in identifying a single ancestral story that’s been important to their family or their family’s way of life, and support participants in generating a narrative poem to hold this precious story.
Poet, journalist, and audio storyteller Sojourner Ahebee archives moments of intimacy between Black women. She writes about insecurity of historical archives & insecurity as a feeling that connects us to our most powerful desires. Her work has appeared in The Atlantic, NPR, The Academy of American Poets, MSNBC & on your grandmother’s radio. A Watering Hole Fellow and the recipient of the MacDowell Colony creative writing fellowship, her debut poetry chapbook, "Reporting from the Belly of the Night," was released in 2017.
